1991:
David Bugeja, Chris Brincat and Marcel Scalpello teamed up to
form the first Death Metal band in Malta. The first years served
the band to establish itself in the local scene and to come
up with a steady line-up. It proved to be a difficult task to
find the right musicians in a scene that was heavily influenced
by rock and speed metal. With members joining and leaving, Beheaded
managed to perform several shows and acquire a distinct place
in the Maltese scene. When the line-up problem seemed to be
overcome, Beheaded concentrated on releasing a demo tape, with
the aim of exposing itself to the foreign Death Metal scene.
1995-1997 - Four songs were completed and the demo was recorded
in March 1995 with Marcel Scalpello (vocals), David Bugeja and
Tyson Fenech (guitars), David Cachia (bass), and Chris Brincat
(drums). The demo 'Souldead' scored high points in several underground
publications that reviewed it. The main comments underlined
the professional quality that the demo boasted; from the great
cover artwork and layout, to the individual musical abilities
and production in evidence throughout the 23 minutes. A slab
of technical and aggressive death metal combined with atmospheric
guitar and keyboard passages. In August the same year Omar Grech
replaced Tyson Fenech on guitars. Beheaded signed a record deal
with Swedish label X-Treme Records to release its debut CD.
The songs that were to appear on the CD were recorded in June
1996, but the release was severely delayed due to problems with
the cover layout and several other shortcomings. Beheaded took
a trip back to the studio late in 1997 to re-master the whole
recording again, making the songs sound fresher being the main
purpose. - 1998 - 'Perpetual Mockery' was finally released in
June 1998, and once again the work was praised by many publications
including renowned magazines like UK's Terrorizer. The music
in the CD again emphasized on the ingredients highlighted in
the demo, this time in the form of better structured songs with
a clearly more mature direction. Beheaded took full advantage
of the good contacts acquired within the European scene and
set up 14 shows across the Czech Republic and another 2 shows
in Germany and Slovakia. These took place during September with
great bands like Vader, Dying Fetus, Deranged and Defaced Creation.
On returning back from the successful live debut abroad, Marcel
Scalpello left the band for personal reasons and was replaced
with Lawrence Joyce. 1999 - The songs completed after the release
of 'Perpetual Mockery' gradually started to outline a change
in musical direction. This was something the band had been after;
the need to move onto something different. The new 'less atmospheric'
approach has resulted in highly technical and brutal compositions,
with lower tuning compared to the material in the previous releases.
Beheaded has also brought to an end their record deal with X-Treme
Records after friendly discussions.
Beheaded signed a new record deal with Danish label Mighty Music. The
first official release was the devastationg M-CD 'Resurgence
of Oblivion'. In 2002 the Maltese death metal gods released
their most brutal effort so far - the amazing "Recounts
Of Disembodiment". Beheaded
also recently completed a big US-tour. Both "Resurgence.."
and "Recounts.." have been licensed by American label
Forever Underground.
